We all stray at times. When this happens, the best we can do is come back humbly and quickly. God receives us with open arms. For this song, I put together a chord progression and sent it off to Jeanine Weintz, who wrote the lyrics based on a theme I suggested. I often write lyrics first and then the music. That seems most natural to me. Sometimes I write both lyrics and music together, also effective. But I rarely write chord progressions and then come up with lyrics to fit them. Don’t know how she did it, but I like the result.

Nathaniel and I had a really hard time getting the drums down on this one. It is a lot different from other songs I’ve done. First we tried recording scratch guitar and vocal (the way we start recording many of our songs) to get the drums, but had a hard time setting a good tempo. Then Nathaniel tried to record against the guitar track I sent to Jeanine. He did a great job but there were some technical problems with the track (I was recording with delay and the timing got weird a couple of times). Then I rerecorded the guitar with the delay against a beat track (glorified metronome) and that worked ok. Nathaniel recorded against that and a scratch vocal, but things were still lacking. Finally I asked Melody to record some piano as we recorded drums, scratch vocal and guitar. It took a day to process it (Melody kinda wanted a “rougher” take on the chorus to create tension), but after listening to the take several times, decided it was pretty darn good. We recorded a different layer of drums on the chorus to build the song there. So, Melody’s keys helped us establish the tempo, but ultimately we didn’t keep them in the recording. Sorry Melody, but you know we couldn’t have done it without you.

NH-usual drum setup; JG-Epiphone bass direct in, the Line 6 was giving us trouble so we ditched it and went direct in; TH-Taylor 614 acoustic. Tim Derkson stopped by to record the acoustic lead on this one.
